Gamma Emerald – EA is an early-access fan-made remake of Pokémon Emerald developed by UndreamedPanic. The project rebuilds the Hoenn region in Unreal Engine 5 while keeping the main story, characters, locations, and events of the original game. Instead of changing the basic structure of Pokémon Emerald, it expands its presentation and adds systems such as real-time lighting, a day-and-night cycle, berry growing, breeding, and Pokémon following the player in the overworld.
Story and Available Areas
The story follows the same general progression as Pokémon Emerald. The player begins in Littleroot Town, receives a starter Pokémon, travels through Hoenn, catches Pokémon, battles trainers, and challenges Gym Leaders. Because this is an Early Access version, only the first part of the region is currently playable. The available route runs from Littleroot Town to Mauville City, including interiors and connected areas. The current build contains approximately three to six hours of gameplay and three Gyms. Areas beyond Mauville are still under development.
Gameplay and Battle System
Exploration and combat follow the standard Pokémon structure. Players move between towns and routes, encounter wild Pokémon, build a party, collect items, and participate in turn-based battles. Abilities, held items, weather conditions, status effects, and the Physical/Special split affect combat. The Early Access build currently supports single battles rather than double battles.
Main gameplay systems include:
- Pokémon catching and party management
- Turn-based trainer and wild Pokémon battles
- Day-and-night encounters
- Berry planting using the real-world clock
- Pokémon breeding through the Daycare
- TM and move management
- Automatic HM actions after obtaining the required HM
- Peer-to-peer Pokémon trading
- Trainer rematches after earning the first three badges
Progression and How to Play
There are no separate traditional levels; progression is based on routes, towns, Pokémon levels, story events, and Gym battles. Players train their team by fighting wild Pokémon and trainers, then prepare for Gym Leaders to obtain badges. After collecting the Stone Badge, Knuckle Badge, and Dynamo Badge, a rematch system becomes available in Pokémon Centers, allowing previous trainers to be challenged again.
Gamma Emerald – EA is currently available for Windows. Keyboard movement uses WASD, Space or Enter confirms interactions, Shift makes the character run, and Escape or Tab opens or closes menus. Controller support is also included, although the developer recommends staying with one control method during a session because switching between keyboard, mouse, and controller can cause interface problems in the current build.
