Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a kart racing game where characters from the Sonic series compete on tracks filled with shortcuts, obstacles, items, and changing terrain. The game does not have a traditional story campaign with a central plot. Instead, progression is based on completing races, Grand Prix events, challenges, and other modes while unlocking additional customization options. Each race combines drifting, boosting, item use, and route selection, so players need to react quickly to changes on the track.
Racing Through Different Worlds
The main feature is the CrossWorld system. During a race, Travel Rings appear and transport all racers into a different environment for part of the event. The player in first place can choose between available portals, determining which CrossWorld becomes the next section of the race. These areas can introduce different layouts, hazards, and terrain, so the route may change significantly between laps.
The main gameplay elements include:
- High-speed kart racing
- Drifting and drift boosts
- Travel Rings leading to CrossWorld tracks
- Items used against opponents
- Multiple vehicle types
- Vehicle parts and performance customization
- Gadgets that modify racing abilities
- Grand Prix and competitive race modes
- Different routes and shortcuts on tracks
Building a Racing Setup
Players can customize vehicles using different parts, colors, decals, textures, horns, and visual effects. Vehicles are divided into Speed, Acceleration, Handling, Power, and Boost types, allowing the player to choose statistics that match their racing style. Gadgets provide additional gameplay bonuses and can improve specific mechanics, such as drifting, collecting Rings, or using items. This makes preparation important because two racers using the same character can still have different setups.
Adapting During Every Lap
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds uses individual tracks and race events rather than conventional action-game levels. Players accelerate, steer, drift through corners, collect Rings, use items, perform tricks, and look for faster routes. Maintaining speed is important, but aggressive item use and good positioning can change the order quickly.
To play effectively, start drifts before tight corners and release them at the right moment to gain a boost. Collect Rings when possible, avoid hazards, and save useful items for situations where they can affect nearby opponents. Travel Rings require quick adaptation because the next section may have completely different corners and obstacles. Winning consistently depends on combining track knowledge, vehicle setup, drifting, items, and reactions to CrossWorld changes.
