Engineering Marvels From Hell is a horror visual novel set inside a secret institution known as the School of Art and Pain. Students at this school study torture as both engineering and artistic practice, learning about devices designed to inflict pain. The player follows a group of students who have spent ten years studying there and are now approaching their graduation project, which determines whether they are allowed to complete their education.

The Final Graduation Project

The central story revolves around creating a new torture device for the final examination. The students discuss different concepts, evaluate whether they are practical, and try to develop something that satisfies the school’s requirements. Failure has serious consequences, so much of the tension comes from whether the group can produce an acceptable design. The game also introduces other students, teachers, previous projects, and examples of devices created within the school.

The game includes:

  •         A story of around 14,000 words
  •         Detailed discussions of fictional torture devices
  •         Graduation projects created by different student groups
  •         Pixel-art environments and character sprites
  •         Character portraits during conversations
  •         Horror and gore scenes
  •         References to historical figures and other fictional characters
  •         Dialogue focused on engineering, anatomy, and project design

Following the Students’ Work

Gameplay is primarily based on reading dialogue and progressing through scripted scenes. Engineering Marvels From Hell functions more like a kinetic visual novel than a traditional RPG, so there are no conventional combat systems, inventories, character upgrades, or separate playable levels. The player advances by continuing conversations, watching events unfold, and learning how the students develop their graduation project. Different locations within the school and surrounding areas are presented as the story progresses.

Horror Through Ideas and Consequences

The horror is built largely around the concepts discussed by the characters and the consequences of unsuccessful projects. Some scenes show the results of torture devices, while others rely on descriptions and conversations rather than constant graphic action. The school treats pain as an academic subject, with disciplines such as mathematics and biology contributing to device design.

To play, the player mainly reads each scene and continues through the dialogue as new parts of the story become available. There are no traditional numbered stages; progression instead follows the group from the preparation of their project toward its final presentation. The full story takes roughly an hour and a half to complete and focuses on whether the students can survive the final requirement of the School of Art and Pain.
