Managing two health bars is one of the main challenges in Bloody Roar 4, a 3D fighting game released for PlayStation 2 in 2003. Ancient Powers and the Temple Conflict

The story revolves around the awakening of a dragon connected to the mysterious power of Gaia. Ryoho, a priest responsible for protecting the dragon, becomes involved in events triggered by Xion and his connection to the Unborn. Mana, a young girl associated with the temple, accompanies Ryoho during the conflict. Other fighters enter the story for different reasons, including personal investigations and their connections to zoanthropes. New characters such as Nagi and Reiji expand the roster alongside returning fighters from previous installments.

Attacking Without Losing Your Beast Form

Bloody Roar 4 introduces a combat system where characters have separate human and Beast health meters. Transforming changes the available attacks and allows players to use the Beast Gauge to absorb damage. Managing both meters is necessary to survive longer matches.

The main gameplay actions include:

•         Move toward opponents or retreat using directional controls.
•         Perform punches, kicks, and character-specific combinations.
•         Block attacks and respond with counterattacks.
•         Transform into Beast form during a fight.
•         Use throws to interrupt defensive opponents.
•         Execute Beast Drive moves while transformed.

•         Monitor both health meters to avoid defeat.

A player can lose health in one form while preserving resources in the other. This creates decisions about when to transform, continue attacking, or return to a defensive position.

Career Mode Beyond Standard Matches

Bloody Roar 4 offers several ways to fight, but Career Mode provides the most extensive progression system. Players advance across a map of connected battles, earning DNA points that can be spent on character improvements. These upgrades allow players to develop abilities and adjust their approach to combat.

Other modes include Arcade, Versus, Survival, and Training. Arcade Mode follows a sequence of opponents, while Survival Mode challenges players to defeat multiple fighters without losing. Training provides an environment for practicing combinations and transformations.

The roster contains 18 playable characters, including returning fighters and unlockable opponents. Each character has different attacks and transformation abilities, encouraging players to experiment with the available fighting styles.

Bloody Roar 4 does not include open-world exploration or traditional platforming levels. Its progression focuses on completing fights, developing characters in Career Mode, and learning how to use the revised transformation system effectively.
