Choosing a character in Bloody Roar 3 means learning two fighting styles instead of one. Every combatant can fight in human form and transform into a creature with different attacks, combinations, and special abilities. Released for PlayStation 2 and arcades in 2001, this installment expands the series’ transformation system with Hyper Beast mode. Players compete in one-on-one matches, manage their Beast Gauge, and look for opportunities to deal damage without leaving themselves vulnerable. The game focuses on fighting rather than exploration, with different modes providing separate combat challenges.
Mysterious Marks and Returning Fighters
The story introduces a phenomenon known as the XGC mark, which appears on certain zoanthropes and causes unusual changes in their abilities. Returning fighters become involved in investigating the mystery, while new characters have their own connections to the events. Xion, a fighter capable of transforming into the Unborn, plays a major role in the storyline. The roster also includes Yugo, Alice, Shina, Jenny, and other returning characters. Individual endings provide additional information about their motivations and experiences.
Building Combos Around Transformation
Bloody Roar 3 uses a fighting system based on punches, kicks, guarding, and Beast attacks. Players can begin combinations in human form and continue attacking after transforming, creating opportunities to extend offensive sequences.
The main gameplay mechanics include:
- Move around the arena using directional controls.
- Attack with punches and kicks to damage opponents.
- Guard against incoming attacks and punish missed strikes.
- Fill the Beast Gauge by fighting and receiving damage.
- Transform into an animal to access additional techniques.
- Activate Hyper Beast mode when the gauge is completely filled.
- Perform Beast Drive attacks to deal substantial damage.
- Use throws and combinations to break through an opponent’s defense.
Hyper Beast mode provides temporary access to enhanced abilities, including the opportunity to perform multiple Beast Drive attacks. However, it has a limited duration, so activating it at the wrong moment can waste valuable attack opportunities.
Different Opponents, Different Approaches
The game includes Arcade, Versus, Survival, and Practice modes. Arcade Mode presents a sequence of opponents, while Survival Mode tests how many consecutive battles a player can complete. Practice Mode allows players to experiment with attacks without the pressure of a regular match.
Each fighter has a different animal transformation and collection of moves. Long uses tiger-based attacks, Bakuryu transforms into a mole, and Stun becomes an insect-like creature. Unlockable characters such as Kohryu and Uranus provide additional fighting options.
Bloody Roar 3 does not feature numbered adventure levels or a character upgrade system. Players progress by winning matches, discovering unlockable content, and improving their knowledge of individual fighters. Learning when to remain human, activate Beast form, or use Hyper Beast mode is an important part of mastering its combat system.
