Songs of Conquest is a turn-based strategy game in which the player develops a faction, controls commanders, and fights for territory. The game is played on maps filled with towns, roads, resources, ruins, guarded areas, and enemy armies. The player gives orders to Wielders, who act as army leaders. They move across the map, collect materials, recruit troops, capture buildings, and take part in battles.
Story Structure and Faction Roles
The game includes four campaigns, and each campaign is linked to one faction. Arleon is built around knights, nobles, and questions of power. Rana focuses on old traditions, marshlands, and non-human creatures. Barya uses trade, invention, gunpowder, and hired soldiers. Loth is connected with necromancy, religious control, and undead armies. The plot is told through missions, dialogue, map events, and songs that expand as the player completes scenarios.
From Map Control to Army Growth
A large part of the gameplay happens before combat begins. The player searches the map for mines, treasure, artifacts, and useful buildings. Settlements can be upgraded to produce stronger units, improve income, or unlock research. Resources are limited, so each choice affects the next stage of the scenario. Building too slowly can leave the player behind, while expanding too quickly can create weak borders and exposed towns.
The game offers several forms of play:
- campaign scenarios with story objectives;
- skirmish matches against computer opponents;
- random maps for different setups;
- custom maps made in the editor;
- puzzle maps with fixed conditions;
- multiplayer, co-op, hot-seat play, and AI allies.
Combat Rules and Tactical Choices
Battles use a separate grid where unit stacks move and attack in turns. Positioning matters because range, movement, terrain, and unit abilities can change the outcome. Wielders do not stand on the battlefield as normal soldiers, but they influence combat through spells and bonuses. Magic depends on essence, which is produced by the army. This means that recruiting units is also a decision about what kind of magic will be available.
Map Editor and Replay Options
Songs of Conquest does not use simple numbered levels. Its progression is based on campaign missions, separate maps, and custom scenarios. The built-in editor allows players to create their own maps with objectives, scripted events, dialogue, music, and different enemy placements. To play well, the player needs to plan movement, manage resources, protect settlements, choose battles carefully, and use the strengths of each faction in the right situation.
