From One Comparison to the Next

A regular round places two character cards side by side. The player studies their names and source fandoms, chooses the character expected to have the higher work count, and then sees the actual statistics. A correct answer increases the current streak, while an incorrect prediction resets it. Since the result appears immediately, every round also provides information that may help with later comparisons.

Different Ways to Play

The game offers several options that change the length or difficulty of a session:

• Daily Challenge contains 10 fixed comparisons;
• every player receives the same Daily set;
• Endless Mode continues through repeated matchups;
• Easy uses larger differences between character counts;
• Normal provides more balanced comparisons;
• Hard uses closer numbers;
• Extreme reduces the differences even further.

The Daily Challenge continues through all ten rounds even after a wrong answer and produces a final result based on the number of correct choices. A new Daily set becomes available every 24 hours, while Endless Mode is designed around maintaining a streak for as long as possible.

Difficulty does not come from enemies or increasingly complex controls. Instead, harder comparisons place characters with more similar AO3 work counts against each other. Knowledge of a franchise can help, but it is also useful to consider how long a fandom has existed, whether particular characters appear in popular relationships, and how active its fanfiction community is. A supporting character from a large fandom can sometimes have a higher total than the protagonist of a smaller series.

Building a Longer Streak

Playing AO3dle requires only selecting a mode and choosing between the characters shown on screen. There are no numbered levels to finish, so improvement is reflected through longer streaks, higher Daily scores, and the ability to handle closer comparisons. Remembering unexpected results becomes useful over time, especially when familiar franchises appear again. The game therefore combines guessing with pattern recognition, asking players to judge fanfiction activity rather than simply identify which character is more widely known outside AO3.
