Better Half follows Thiu, a man struggling with depression who turns to magic in an attempt to change himself. The solution goes wrong and literally divides him into two separate people: one carries the more cheerful and energetic parts of his personality, while the other remains pessimistic and deeply unhappy. Neither half can simply return to normal, so the two versions of Thiu are forced to live with each other while looking for a way to deal with the consequences of the spell.
Living With Yourself
Most of the game is presented as a visual novel, with conversations and player choices determining how the two Thius treat one another. Their personalities create constant conflict because each represents qualities the other lacks. Other characters, including people familiar with magic, become involved as the situation develops. The story uses dark humor alongside subjects such as self-loathing, depression, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts rather than treating the magical split as a simple fantasy problem.
Decisions Between the Two Halves
Choices gradually determine what kind of relationship develops between the two versions of Thiu. The game contains around 23,000 words and several different conclusions, including three main endings and an additional bad ending.
During the story, the player can:
- choose how one Thiu responds to the other;
- support or reject the more miserable half;
- decide how to handle the consequences of the magical separation;
- influence whether the two become closer or remain in conflict;
- make decisions that determine whether they stay separated or become whole again;
- reach different endings based on earlier responses.
One possible direction has the two halves learning to coexist as separate people, while another allows Thiu to merge back into a single person. A more unusual route develops their attachment much further and can lead to the Couple Ending, where the two versions remain together romantically. The bad route instead follows the consequences of making decisions that leave the miserable Thiu in a much worse state.
Choosing What “Better” Means
Better Half has no combat, exploration stages, equipment, or character leveling. Progress comes entirely from reading conversations and deciding how Thiu reacts to himself and the people around him. The central question is whether removing the parts of yourself you dislike actually makes life better. Replaying with different responses changes the relationship between the two halves and leads to another ending, making the choices about Thiu’s identity and future the main gameplay system.
