The Spotter: Dig or Die combines daytime mining with nighttime base defense. The player is the last Spotter stationed at a damaged gas station in Nevada after a major sandstorm destroys the base and breaks the receiver used to contact the President. The main objective is to repair that receiver while surviving repeated attacks from mutants coming from the ruins of Las Veganos. Progress alternates between gathering resources during the day and defending the station after dark.

Digging and Gathering Resources

During daylight, the player travels underground to mine materials needed for repairs and upgrades. Early digging is done with basic equipment, but tools can later be improved, including stronger drills and mobility upgrades for the jetpack. Fatigue limits how long the player can continue exploring, so each trip involves deciding when to keep digging and when to return to the surface. Underground areas also contain artifacts, hidden rooms, puzzles, and special components required for later progression.

Defending the Gas Station

Night changes the focus from exploration to tower defense. Mutants attack the gas station in waves, and the player must prepare defensive structures before they arrive. Automated machine guns, laser cannons, rocket launchers, barriers, mines, and traps can be placed around the base. The main turret can also be controlled directly when additional firepower is needed.

The main activities include:

  •         digging underground for resources and components;
  •         upgrading the shovel, drill, jetpack, and other equipment;
  •         building turrets, barriers, traps, and mines;
  •         defending the station against mutant waves;
  •         using the main turret during difficult attacks;
  •         finding artifacts that change gameplay;
  •         improving the character, defenses, and base through separate upgrade trees.

Upgrades and Progress

The upgrade system is divided between character improvements, defensive equipment, and the base itself. Players can specialize in different combat approaches, including precise Railgun attacks, continuous Tesla Cannon fire, or explosive Cluster Grenade Launcher builds. Artifacts can also modify how defenses work, such as slowing turret projectiles, adding controllable drones, or protecting the station with an energy shield.

The game does not use traditional numbered levels. Progress comes from surviving additional day-and-night cycles, reaching deeper underground areas, finding required components, and strengthening the base enough to survive harder attacks. Exploration eventually expands beyond the original station and mine, with additional areas, enemies, secrets, and late-game equipment becoming available. The central goal remains the same throughout the game: repair the receiver, protect the gas station, and survive long enough to receive the President’s message.
