Rather than exploring locations through direct movement or completing action challenges, players influence the narrative by deciding what Max says and does.

The Photography Contest

Max is an 18-year-old student in her second year at Blackwell Academy, located in Arcadia Bay, Oregon. She hopes to enter a photography contest organized by the school, but participation requires choosing another student as her partner. Four characters are available: Chloe Price, Kate Marsh, Victoria Chase, and Rachel Amber. Each possible partnership introduces a separate storyline. The game takes place in an alternative setting where the characters can develop relationships without the major conflicts associated with the original story.

Decisions and Narrative Paths

Love Is Strange is structured around dialogue and illustrated scenes. Players read conversations and select responses when choices become available. The selected options influence how characters interact with Max and may change subsequent events. Individual routes contain their own developments, meaning that completing one storyline does not reveal everything available in the game.

The main activities include:

  •         Selecting a partner for the photography contest.
  •         Reading conversations between Max and other characters.
  •         Choosing responses during important interactions.
  •         Checking journal entries that reflect previous decisions.
  •         Following different routes to discover alternative outcomes.

These mechanics connect player choices with narrative progression. Conversations provide information about the characters, while decisions determine how particular situations unfold. The journal changes during the story, allowing players to follow Max’s experiences as the selected route develops.

Endings and Additional Content

The game contains nine endings across its different narrative paths. It also includes 32 achievements and a gallery with 48 unlockable images. These features encourage players to revisit earlier decisions and explore routes they have not completed. There are no traditional levels, combat encounters, or character statistics to improve.

To play, users advance through the dialogue and select one of the available responses whenever a decision appears. The chosen partner determines the main storyline, while later choices influence individual conversations and events. Reaching an ending completes that version of Max’s story. Players can then begin another playthrough, choose a different partner, or make alternative decisions to discover additional scenes and unlock more content.
