Mazebound begins with the player facing a large gate while the sea blocks the way behind. Entering the maze is the only route forward, and survival becomes the main objective. The game uses a first-person perspective and can be played alone or cooperatively. There is no dialogue-heavy story campaign; the premise is built around moving deeper into the maze, finding resources, staying fed, and surviving the creatures that live inside it.

There is no dialogue-heavy story campaign; the premise is built around moving deeper into the maze, finding resources, staying fed, and surviving the creatures that live inside it.

Gathering and Crafting

Resources found inside the maze are necessary for staying alive. Players can tear branches from the environment, break crates for scrap, pick berries, hunt for food, and light fires. Wood, stone, and scrap can be turned into weapons, while torches provide light in dark areas. Crude defenses can also be constructed when holding a position becomes necessary. Because useful materials must be found during exploration, moving farther into the maze also means deciding what is worth carrying.

Exploring the Maze

The maze is not divided into a simple series of numbered levels. Instead, players explore connected areas and gradually reach deeper regions, including places such as the Abyss and Black Forest. Waystones can be found in parts of the maze and help with navigation. Different areas contain their own creatures and resources, so progressing farther changes both the threats and the materials that can be found.

The main activities include:

  •         exploring maze passages and searching for routes forward;
  •         collecting wood, stone, scrap, berries, and other resources;
  •         hunting and finding food to manage hunger;
  •         crafting weapons, torches, and basic defenses;
  •         using fires and light to navigate dark areas;
  •         fighting or avoiding hostile creatures;
  •         working together with other players during cooperative runs.

Creatures and Survival

Hostile creatures are one of the main dangers inside Mazebound. Some crawl through the environment, others remain hidden and wait, and certain enemies imitate human forms. Staying in one place for too long can become dangerous, so movement is an important part of survival. The game also reacts to sound: monsters can hear the player, making noise another factor to consider while exploring.

Progress comes from surviving longer, reaching deeper sections, gathering better resources, and learning how different creatures behave. Hardcore Mode adds a separate challenge with permanent death, faster hunger loss, fewer Waystones, additional monsters, and doors that close at night. A failed normal attempt allows the player to return and try again, while Hardcore Mode ends the entire run after death.
