John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando Demo is a first-person action game about a group of mercenaries fighting an outbreak of mutated undead creatures. The disaster begins after an experiment involving the Earth’s core releases the Sludge God, which starts transforming the surrounding area and turning living creatures into monsters. The demo covers the beginning of this conflict and lets players experience the first part of the campaign through a tutorial, a full mission, and a central base area.
Missions and Objectives
The demo includes The Drop, which introduces movement, shooting, abilities, and basic combat mechanics, followed by Church of the Damned, the first main mission. Between missions, players return to Leon’s Base, a safe hub where they can prepare for another run, change equipment, customize their character, and use the shooting range. Missions can be replayed on several difficulty settings, including Story, Normal, Hard, and Very Hard.
Combat and Classes
Gameplay is built around fighting large groups of infected enemies. Players use firearms, grenades, melee weapons, and class-specific abilities while constantly changing position to avoid being surrounded. Four classes are available in the demo, each with its own skills and upgrade path. The main activities include:
- shooting large groups of infected enemies;
- selecting one of four classes;
- using grenades and special abilities;
- upgrading skills up to the demo level cap;
- changing weapons and loadouts;
- reviving teammates and sharing ammunition;
- completing missions on higher difficulties.
Vehicles and Exploration
The maps are semi-open and include vehicles that can be found during missions. Different vehicles have different characteristics, including mounted weapons, special functions, or tools such as winches. Players can use them to move between objectives, cross larger areas faster, and drive directly through groups of infected.
Progress in the demo revolves around repeating missions, improving class skills, testing different weapons, and learning how to handle larger enemy waves. Players can prepare at the hub, select a mission and difficulty, then enter the combat area and complete its objectives. The combination of shooting, class abilities, vehicles, and large enemy groups makes positioning and cooperation important, especially on the higher difficulty levels where enemies become harder to control.
