Asphalt 8 is an arcade racing game built around licensed cars and motorcycles, short events, vehicle development, and online competition. It does not have a continuous storyline or named protagonist. Instead, players build a garage and complete races across locations such as Tokyo, Venice, London, Nevada, and Iceland. The current game includes more than 300 licensed vehicles and over 75 track variations, with both offline and online activities available.
Racing on the Ground and in the Air
Races combine regular driving with drifting, nitro boosts, collisions, shortcuts, and aerial stunts. Ramps allow vehicles to perform barrel rolls and flat spins, which can refill nitro and help maintain speed. Players must also learn the layout of each course because alternate routes may provide faster corners, additional ramps, or fewer obstacles. Controls can be adjusted to use touch steering, tilt movement, a keyboard, or a compatible controller, depending on the platform.
Events and Garage Progression
Asphalt 8 does not use traditional numbered levels. Career Mode contains a large collection of events that gradually require faster vehicle classes and higher performance ratings. Other activities provide different objectives and rewards, including:
- Standard races against computer-controlled drivers
- Elimination events where the last racer is removed
- Knockdown challenges based on crashing opponents
- Infected races with changing speed conditions
- Time-limited events with specific vehicles
- Real-time multiplayer races for up to 12 players
- Gauntlet competitions using several cars from one garage
Completing events provides credits, upgrade materials, vehicle cards, and other resources. New cars can be purchased or unlocked, while existing vehicles can be improved to meet the rating requirements of later races.
Maintaining Speed Through Every Corner
Effective driving requires careful use of drifting and nitro. A short drift can fill the nitro bar, but sliding for too long reduces speed. Nitro should be activated after corners, jumps, or collisions when acceleration is needed. Players can also knock down rivals by hitting them at sufficient speed, although an incorrect collision may slow their own vehicle or cause a wreck.
