Retail Hell is a first-person horror management game set inside a convenience store located between life and death. The player works an apparently endless shift, serving supernatural customers while trying to keep the business running. Ordinary retail duties such as stocking shelves, preparing coffee and hot dogs, cleaning the store, and repairing machinery are mixed with dangerous encounters. Money earned from customers has to cover new stock, taxes, and other expenses, while the larger story gradually reveals why the clerk is trapped in this strange workplace.
Running the Store Under Pressure
Customers arrive with orders for products such as drinks, chips, cigarettes, cereal, beans, and prepared food. Some buy several items at once, so keeping popular products in stock becomes important as the shifts grow busier. Coffee can be prepared in advance, deliveries replenish missing goods, and the layout of stock affects how quickly orders can be completed. Customers also have patience limits, meaning slow service can create additional problems.
The store’s visitors are not normal shoppers. Different creatures introduce their own rules, effects, and dangers, forcing the player to recognize who has entered and react correctly.
- Sweet Tooth demands a free chocolate bar.
- Mothman must be served with the lights switched off.
- Eye-Globe makes orders harder to read.
- The Shapeshifter reverses movement.
- Death Metalhead starts a timed skull-collecting challenge.
- The TV Show Host offers a risky quiz for money.
- Doppelgangers imitate other customers and must be identified.
- Some creatures can kill the player immediately if their special rule is ignored.
Monsters and Survival Events
Certain encounters temporarily turn store management into a survival challenge. The Stalker requires the player to remain completely still, while Scritcher can be stopped by quickly lowering the armored shutter. Another creature moves closer whenever it is not being watched and must be kept away with cleaner. The Meat Corridor sequence removes the player from the shop entirely and starts a chase toward an escape point. Even quieter moments can be dangerous, as a creature hiding in the ventilation system may steal carried items.
Organs, Secrets, and Multiple Endings
Money can also be spent at Roy’s shop on organs that provide permanent bonuses. Arms increase inventory capacity, Legs improve movement speed, the Stomach extends shift time, and the Liver slows the loss of customer patience. These upgrades help during later shifts, when running the store and responding to monsters become harder.
Retail Hell also contains several endings. Different outcomes depend on choices involving characters, special items, upgrades, and the way the player handles their employment contract. It is possible to remain an ordinary worker, escape through the ventilation system, accept the company’s terms, help another trapped soul, reject the contract entirely, or pursue a secret ending connected to buying every organ upgrade. The management loop therefore gradually develops into a larger mystery about the clerk’s past and the reason the shift refuses to end.
