Cursed Companions is a cooperative horror game built around voice recognition. Every player receives a forbidden word or phrase, and saying it causes damage. At the same time, speech is also required to interact with parts of the dungeon, activate effects, deal with traps, and influence certain monsters. There is no traditional story campaign with fixed chapters. Instead, each run focuses on entering a dungeon, surviving its hazards, collecting useful items, and completing objectives with the rest of the group.

Voice-Based Gameplay

The game constantly listens to what players say. Some phrases produce useful effects, such as lighting a torch, disabling traps, healing teammates, or forcing specific creatures to retreat. Other words can create problems by triggering a curse, waking monsters, or damaging nearby companions. This means players must communicate while also remembering which words are dangerous during the current run.

Dungeons, Monsters, and Items

Dungeons are procedurally generated, so their layouts change between runs. More than twenty monster types can appear, and some react directly to speech. For example, the Foul Moth punishes swearing, while other creatures respond to particular phrases or track players by sound or sight. Main gameplay elements include:

  •         exploring randomly generated dungeons;
  •         avoiding personal forbidden words;
  •         using spoken phrases to activate effects;
  •         fighting or distracting monsters;
  •         disabling traps;
  •         buying magical equipment and potions;
  •         using items such as the Teleport Stone and Ice Wand;
  •         surviving boss encounters.

Game Modes

Several modes change the structure of a run. Standard co-op focuses on surviving together, while Challenge Mode uses more difficult dungeon conditions. Endless Mode continues for as long as the group can stay alive, and two standalone stages are centered on boss fights. Traitor Mode adds social deduction, with hidden traitors secretly trying to sabotage the group. Players can call emergency meetings and vote suspected traitors out.

Progress comes from learning how monsters react, coordinating speech with teammates, and using equipment effectively. Players can also unlock character skins by defeating bosses, completing challenges, surviving difficult situations, or dying in specific ways. A customizable home area provides another form of progression between dungeon runs.
