Fish Lab is an incremental collection game where fish appear in large numbers and become the main source of money for an expanding laboratory. The player collects them by moving the cursor over fish in time with the music, turning each successful catch into currency. As the total rises, the lab grows automatically and new systems become available. The game can eventually display extremely large schools, with up to 100,000 fish appearing on screen at once.

Collecting Fish to the Beat

Timing matters because fish collection is synchronized with the soundtrack rather than being based only on constant clicking. Different tools help gather larger numbers of fish, and the player decides which equipment should receive additional power. This creates a gradual shift from manually collecting small groups toward managing increasingly effective tools that can process far more fish at once. Every fish still contributes money, so improving collection speed directly affects how quickly the laboratory develops.

Upgrading the Laboratory

Fish Lab contains more than 200 upgrades in its technology tree. Money and progression can be invested into equipment improvements, while grants provide access to larger upgrades that significantly change the laboratory’s capabilities. Choosing where to direct power is also part of the progression, since not every tool has to receive the same amount of support.

The main progression systems include:

  •         collecting fish by hovering over them on the beat;
  •         earning money from every collected fish;
  •         powering different collection tools;
  •         purchasing more than 200 technology upgrades;
  •         writing grants to unlock major equipment improvements;
  •         expanding the laboratory automatically through continued play;
  •         experimenting with Sandbox, Endless, and Zen modes.

The game does not use a traditional story campaign, combat system, or character-driven quest line. Its progression is numerical and mechanical: collect more fish, earn more money, unlock better equipment, and increase how efficiently the laboratory operates. The amount happening on screen grows along with these upgrades, turning the early collection process into a much larger automated operation.

Other Ways to Play

Beyond the main incremental progression, Fish Lab includes additional modes for different types of sessions. Sandbox allows freer experimentation with the systems, Endless removes the normal stopping point and lets progression continue, while Zen is designed as a passive visual mode that can also function as a Windows screensaver. The central loop remains the same throughout: collect fish in rhythm, improve the tools responsible for gathering them, and keep expanding the lab until the screen is filled with increasingly large schools.
