Birdwatching is the central activity in Flock Around. The player explores Goose Lake Sanctuary, searches for different bird species, and photographs them for a park guidebook. Each species has several entries to complete, so finding a bird once is not always enough. Photos may be needed from different angles or while the bird is performing a particular action, including front, back, side, and flight poses. There is no story campaign or sequence of combat encounters; progress comes from exploration, photography, and completing the collection.

Exploring the Sanctuary

Goose Lake Sanctuary contains several biomes where different birds can be found. Players walk through these areas, listen for birds, watch their surroundings, and approach potential subjects carefully. Getting too close or making too much noise can cause a bird to fly away. Some species can also be attracted by performing actions or using specific items, giving players another way to obtain the photographs still missing from the guidebook.

Photography and Progress

Taking a picture is only part of the process. Photographs can be developed for in-game money, and their value depends on factors such as distance and whether the bird has already been photographed. Money can then be spent on useful birdwatching equipment and cosmetic items. Camera and binocular upgrades improve the tools available during later trips through the sanctuary.

The main activities include:

  •         exploring different biomes for bird species;
  •         photographing birds in several required poses;
  •         using items and actions to attract certain birds;
  •         developing photographs for money;
  •         filling entries in the guidebook;
  •         upgrading the camera and binoculars;
  •         buying clothing and customizing the birder.

Flock Around can be explored alone or cooperatively with up to ten players. A group can search different areas, help locate birds, photograph the same species, or take pictures of one another. Proximity voice chat also affects birdwatching because nearby noise can scare birds, so players may need to stay quiet when approaching a difficult subject.

Completing the Guidebook

There are no traditional numbered levels to finish. Advancement is measured by discovering more species, completing their required photographs, earning money, improving equipment, and expanding the guidebook. Common birds are easier to find, while rarer species may require more searching or the correct method of attracting them. The main challenge is therefore observation: locate a bird, approach without disturbing it, position the camera correctly, and capture the missing pose before it moves away.
