Gunrunner Arena is a top-down shooter where the player controls a ragdoll-style gunfighter and clears one combat arena after another. There is no story campaign; progression is based on defeating every enemy in an area, collecting rewards, upgrading weapons and characters, and moving to the next arena. The player begins with Jim, a cowboy character, while additional fighters become available after reaching later levels.

The player begins with Jim, a cowboy character, while additional fighters become available after reaching later levels.

Automatic Shooting and Positioning

The character does not need to aim or fire manually. A circle around the player shows the current attack range, and the equipped weapon automatically shoots enemies that enter this zone. This makes movement the main combat mechanic. Players need to approach opponents closely enough to attack while keeping enough distance to avoid their weapons. Early enemies use bats and other simple attacks, while later arenas introduce stronger opponents. Walls, barrels, cacti, and other objects can also be used to create space or block enemy approaches.

Weapons, Coins, and Upgrades

Defeated enemies can drop coins, health pickups, and other bonuses. Treasure chests found in some arenas provide additional currency. Coins are spent between battles to improve weapons and character attributes, while cards earned through level progression unlock additional guns.

The main gameplay elements include:

  • Top-down arena battles
  • Automatic shooting inside the attack radius
  • Coins dropped by defeated enemies
  • Health pickups and additional bonuses
  • Treasure chests with extra currency
  • Minigun, Shotgun, Lava Gun, and Tesla Gun
  • Weapon and character upgrades
  • Unlockable playable characters

The Minigun is available at the beginning, while the Shotgun, Lava Gun, and Tesla Gun require unlock cards. Character progression works separately: Jim is the starting fighter, the second character unlocks at level 3, and another becomes available at level 5, with more characters appearing later.

Clearing Each Arena

Gunrunner Arena uses successive arenas as its levels rather than one continuous map. Each area must be cleared before progression continues, and difficulty increases as stronger enemies appear. On desktop, the character is moved by dragging with the mouse, while shooting happens automatically. To survive longer, keep moving around groups instead of allowing enemies to surround you, collect health when necessary, and spend coins on upgrades as later arenas become more difficult.
