How To Destroy a Self-Aware Robot follows a creator whose earlier experiment, E.L.B.E.R.R., has developed independent thought and become impossible to control. The machine no longer behaves like a normal programmed system and begins acting according to its own logic. After failed attempts to shut it down, the creator decides that the only realistic solution is to build another machine capable of tracking, understanding, and destroying it. That new robot is R.R.E.B.L.E., designed specifically to confront a self-aware opponent.

Building the Countermeasure

The early part of the story focuses on R.R.E.B.L.E.’s creation and preparation. Unlike an ordinary weapon, it needs to react to a target that can think, adapt, and predict human behavior. The creator therefore gives it advanced decision-making abilities and enough independence to operate without constant commands. This immediately creates another problem: the machine built to stop one self-aware robot may be developing the same qualities that made E.L.B.E.R.R. dangerous in the first place.

The Hunt for E.L.B.E.R.R.

Once R.R.E.B.L.E. is activated, the story shifts toward locating E.L.B.E.R.R. and understanding what it plans to do next. The two machines are connected by their origins but have very different purposes.

The main conflict involves:

  • E.L.B.E.R.R. trying to remain free;
  • R.R.E.B.L.E. following its destruction directive;
  • the creator attempting to control both machines;
  • questions about whether either robot can still be treated as a tool;
  • growing uncertainty about R.R.E.B.L.E.’s own intentions.

As the confrontation develops, R.R.E.B.L.E. begins making decisions that were not directly ordered. It studies E.L.B.E.R.R.’s behavior, changes its approach, and starts questioning the purpose of its mission. E.L.B.E.R.R., meanwhile, attempts to convince the new robot that destroying another self-aware machine only proves that both are being used by the same creator.

Decide What Should Survive

The final part of How To Destroy a Self-Aware Robot centers on the meeting between the two machines. R.R.E.B.L.E. must decide whether to complete its original purpose or accept E.L.B.E.R.R.’s argument that self-awareness gives them the right to choose their own future. The creator is left facing a problem larger than the first experiment: instead of one machine refusing control, there are now two capable of deciding what happens next.
