Pratfall begins with a simple rescue attempt after the player’s dog falls into a deep hole at a construction site. Reaching the dog means descending through a large cave system filled with unstable terrain, gaps, traps, and other hazards. The game can be played alone or cooperatively, with players working their way downward while trying to survive falls and keep the group together. Each run changes because the underground areas are procedurally generated.

Descending Through the Caves

Movement is heavily affected by physics and fall damage. Players can jump down to lower areas, climb across uneven terrain, and catch teammates before they fall too far. If another player is knocked down, they can be revived instead of being removed from the run immediately. The caves contain three procedurally generated biomes, so routes, terrain, and hazards are not arranged exactly the same way every time.

Tools and Survival

Exploration involves finding useful items scattered or buried underground. A pickaxe and drill can break terrain and create new paths, while explosives can clear larger sections. Ziplines help cross wide gaps, flares provide light in dark areas, and food restores health after injuries. Magic beans can also be used to create another way through difficult terrain.

The main activities include:

  •         descending deeper into the cave system;
  •         digging through destructible walls and floors;
  •         using explosives to open routes;
  •         placing or using ziplines to cross gaps;
  •         finding food and other useful items;
  •         catching or reviving teammates after falls;
  •         using flares to illuminate dark sections;
  •         continuing downward until the missing dog is reached.

Runs are built around choosing a safe route while dealing with gravity and destructible terrain. A direct drop may save time but can cause serious damage, while digging a longer route can reduce the risk. Items found along the way create additional options, and cooperative groups can split tasks between digging, carrying equipment, helping injured players, and finding a route downward.

Reaching the Dog

Pratfall does not use traditional numbered levels or a linear sequence of missions. Progress is measured by how far the group descends during the current rescue attempt. Falling, explosions, dangerous terrain, and poor route choices can end a run before the dog is found. Because the caves are generated differently between attempts, players need to react to the terrain they encounter rather than memorize one fixed route. The central goal remains the same throughout: go deeper, stay alive, help the group when necessary, and reach the missing dog.
