Remember is a psychological horror visual novel about a person whose ordinary life is disrupted after finding an old music playlist from their teenage years. Listening to familiar songs brings back memories of the creepypasta fandom and the internet culture connected to that period. Soon afterward, the protagonist unexpectedly wakes up in a forest where several familiar figures are searching for them. The main objective is to understand why they have been brought there and find a way out, although survival is not guaranteed.
Five Chapters and Several Story Paths
The complete story is planned as five chapters, including the prologue. The currently available version contains the prologue, Chapter 1, and part of Chapter 2. Rather than using traditional levels, the game progresses through visual novel scenes, conversations, and decisions. Different choices lead toward realistic routes with bad endings, true routes that form the main canon story, and additional sub-routes centered on individual characters.
Choices, Affection, and Creepypasta Characters
Gameplay is based mainly on reading, making decisions, and building relationships. An affection meter tracks how close the protagonist becomes to certain characters, and some routes can develop into romance. Players can encounter:
- Jeff the Killer;
- Eyeless Jack;
- Masky;
- Hoodie;
- Ticci-Toby;
- Slenderman through a separate route;
- Ben Drowned through a separate route.
Choices can change later scenes and determine which route becomes available. The game also contains hidden easter eggs that must be discovered to unlock secret endings.
Music as Part of the Story
Music is directly connected to the narrative rather than serving only as background audio. The game references shoegaze, emo, alternative metal, and songs associated with internet culture from roughly the 2012–2015 period. Main characters are also connected with individual representative songs, making music part of how their personalities and relationships are presented.
There is no combat system, inventory management, or free exploration in the traditional sense. Players advance text, select dialogue options, follow different branches, and search for hidden details that may affect later outcomes. Remember is mainly about uncovering why the protagonist has entered the forest, understanding the people found there, and deciding which relationships and choices will lead toward escape, romance, a bad ending, or one of the hidden conclusions.
