Valheim Base Defense refers to the defensive side of Valheim, where players protect settlements from creatures and raid events. There is no separate story specifically for base defense. Instead, it is part of normal survival progression. As bosses are defeated and new biomes become accessible, raids can introduce stronger enemies near the player’s base. Defending successfully requires preparation because enemies can attack buildings, gates, crops, animals, and other structures.
Preparing the Perimeter Before a Raid
Players can surround a settlement with stakewalls, stone structures, trenches, raised terrain, or other barriers. Moats and earth walls are useful because they can prevent many ground enemies from reaching important buildings. Workbenches and similar player structures can also reduce hostile spawning inside protected areas. Gates and narrow entrances create controlled points where enemies can be fought without allowing them to spread through the settlement.
The main defensive activities include:
- building walls around important structures;
- digging trenches or moats;
- raising terrain to create barriers;
- creating controlled entrances and chokepoints;
- protecting crops and domesticated animals;
- preventing enemies from spawning inside the base;
- repairing damaged structures after attacks;
- using ranged weapons against enemies outside the walls.
Raids Change as the World Progresses
Valheim does not use base-defense levels in a traditional tower-defense format. Instead, raids appear as temporary events during normal exploration and building. The types of enemies that can participate change as the world progresses and bosses are defeated. Early settlements may face Greydwarfs and similar creatures, while later bases can be attacked by stronger enemies from more advanced biomes. This means a defense that works early in a playthrough may need to be expanded later.
Choosing Where the Enemies Can Attack
A useful defense does not always require completely sealing the base. Creating a narrow route into the settlement can make enemy movement more predictable and provide a specific place for the player to fight. Natural cliffs, rivers, hills, and steep terrain can also become part of the defensive layout, reducing the number of directions that need protection.
Base defense therefore combines building, terrain modification, combat, and preparation. Players improve their defenses as stronger materials and construction options become available, while also adapting the settlement to new raid types. There is no final base-defense mission. Protecting a settlement remains an ongoing part of Valheim as the player explores new biomes and advances through the game.
