EMPULSE is a fast-paced first-person shooter built around 6v6 team battles in the vertical streets of Freehold. There is no traditional story campaign with missions or narrative chapters. Matches focus on completing team objectives, defeating opponents, controlling important areas, and using the movement system to attack from unexpected directions. Players can combine parkour abilities with firearms and temporary control of powerful mechs.
Movement and Combat
Movement is one of the main parts of every fight. Players can run along walls, use a grappling hook, slide, activate Holojumps, and use jetpacks to stay in motion. These abilities can be chained together, allowing a player to move quickly between rooftops, walls, platforms, and combat areas. The grappling hook can also pull enemies closer for a melee attack.
Weapons, P.A.I.N.T., and Mechs
Gunplay is combined with special equipment that changes how players move or control an area. Main gameplay elements include:
- fighting in 6v6 team matches;
- running along vertical surfaces;
- swinging with the grappling hook;
- using Holojumps and jetpacks;
- customizing weapons and loadouts;
- using Jump, Speed, Explosive, Heal, and Sticky P.A.I.N.T. Bombs;
- competing for control of mechs;
- completing challenges and weapon progression;
- playing objective-based and ranked matches.
Controlling Mechs
Mechs appear during matches as contested objectives rather than equipment that players can use at any time. Two can spawn near the center of a map, encouraging both teams to fight for them. Once claimed, a mech provides a chaingun, rockets, melee attacks, a bubble shield, a dash, and a charge jump that ends with an area-damaging ground impact.
There are no traditional levels that need to be completed in sequence. Progress comes from playing matches, completing challenges, improving weapons, increasing the account level, and unlocking additional content. The basic gameplay loop consists of entering a match, using movement abilities to reach objectives or flank opponents, fighting with a chosen loadout, competing for mechs, and adapting to the selected mode. Maps are designed around vertical movement, so combining wall-runs, grapples, jumps, and P.A.I.N.T. effects is as important as accurate shooting.
