A boating trip goes wrong at the beginning of How to Fish, leaving the player stranded on a small island with no simple way home. Escaping means learning to catch strange creatures, completing tasks for local characters, earning money, and opening a route through a chain of islands. Fishing is only part of the process: catches can lead directly into physics-based fights, while better equipment and transportation gradually allow the journey to continue.

Catch, Fight, and Sell

Fishing starts with casting a line and pulling creatures out of the water, but landing a catch does not always end the encounter. Some fish and other animals can become active threats once they reach land. Weapons and tools can then be used to finish the fight, after which catches can be sold for money or kept when they are needed for quests. The physics system affects both fishing and combat, making objects, creatures, and players behave unpredictably.

Players regularly need to:

  • catch different fish and creatures;
  • sell valuable catches;
  • buy rods, weapons, and other gear;
  • talk to island characters;
  • complete small quests;
  • defeat large boss creatures;
  • keep important trophies for progression;
  • improve the boat;
  • travel to the next island.

Islands and Bosses

Progress follows a sequence of islands, with each area introducing another set of tasks and enemies. The early route begins around the lighthouse and eventually leads through forest, desert, rocky, and later areas. Boss encounters are connected to progression, including creatures such as the Spider Crab, Giant Piranha, Pufferfish, and Albatross. Defeating them and delivering the required items helps unlock the next part of the journey.

Equipment and Cooperation

Money earned from catches can be spent on fishing gear, weapons, and boat improvements. A stronger rod helps with fishing, while firearms and other tools make dangerous creatures easier to handle. Boat upgrades are especially important because travelling between islands is part of reaching the later sections.

How to Fish therefore develops into more than a simple fishing simulator. The player moves between islands, experiments with physics, catches unusual creatures, fights anything that refuses to stay caught, completes quests, and gradually improves the equipment needed to continue the trip home.
