Insomnia begins with an ordinary high school student getting pulled into a situation that becomes increasingly disturbing. Rumors start spreading, strange encounters become harder to ignore, and eventually the protagonist crosses paths with a mysterious man whose Glasgow smile immediately connects him to the Jeff the Killer legend. Rather than recreating the original creepypasta directly, the story uses a new protagonist and gradually draws them into Jeff’s violent past.

Choices Shape the Conversation

Most of the gameplay is built around reading scenes and choosing dialogue options. Different responses can change how characters react, making conversations an important part of surviving uncomfortable situations. Some choices allow the protagonist to remain cautious, while others can provoke Jeff or push the interaction in a more dangerous direction.

The player regularly has to:

  •         choose dialogue responses;
  •         decide how much information to reveal;
  •         react to threatening situations;
  •         interact with Jeff and original characters;
  •         follow rumors about recent events;
  •         examine changes in relationships;
  •         avoid choices that can lead to death;
  •         replay scenes to test different responses;
  •         uncover more of Jeff’s reimagined backstory.

Meeting Jeff the Killer

Jeff is not presented simply as an enemy who appears for a chase sequence. Much of the tension comes from speaking with him and trying to understand his behavior. His reactions can shift depending on how the protagonist approaches him, making some conversations feel as dangerous as direct confrontation.

Psychological Horror and Bad Decisions

Insomnia uses violence and gore, but its horror is also based on uncertainty and social pressure. The protagonist is still dealing with school life and other people while becoming involved with someone clearly dangerous. This makes apparently small decisions feel increasingly important.

The game progresses through dialogue, character interactions, and branching choices rather than exploration or combat. A wrong response can lead to a fatal outcome, while replaying allows the player to discover different conversations and reactions. Insomnia uses the familiar Jeff the Killer concept as the foundation for a new visual-novel story focused on choice, tension, and the protagonist’s growing connection to Jeff.
