Being trapped inside a quiet house with Demyan is the central situation in It Reeks of Rot: Spring. The game is a psychological horror visual novel where the protagonist has been taken away and forced to remain with a man whose behavior can shift between hesitant, possessive, and violent. The current story focuses on Demyan alone, while later entries in the larger seasonal series are planned around different characters. There is no traditional action campaign or open exploration map. Progress comes through reading, making choices, watching Demyan’s reactions, and learning more about what happened before the protagonist was brought there.
Living With Demyan
Most of the demo takes place inside the house, where ordinary activities become part of the tension. The player can eat, read, sleep, talk with Demyan, and occasionally test the limits of what he allows. His behavior changes depending on the situation, and certain actions can provoke aggression or reveal more about his mental state. The story also contains supernatural elements, although the developer has confirmed that Demyan’s own psychological problems are separate from whatever unexplained events exist around him.
Choices, Books, and Hidden Details
The gameplay is mainly based on visual novel decisions and small variations in how scenes unfold. During the current demo, the player can:
- choose how to respond to Demyan;
- decide whether to eat or refuse food;
- attempt actions that may anger him;
- read books inside the house;
- influence later text by choosing specific reading material;
- encounter poems and short passages between story transitions;
- observe hidden reactions connected to names and previous choices.
One confirmed variation involves the elk book: later transitional writing changes depending on whether the player gave it to Demyan. Some of the poetry and recurring elk imagery also connects to his psychology, making optional reading more than simple background decoration.
Days and Story Progression
It Reeks of Rot: Spring does not use conventional numbered levels, but its story is divided into days. The available demo currently covers Day 1, while Day 2 is in development. The developer has also stated that Spring is the first part of a seasonal sequence that will move through Spring, Winter, Autumn, and Summer, with each season focusing on a different love interest.
Playing mainly requires paying attention to Demyan’s mood, reading dialogue carefully, and deciding how much the protagonist should resist or cooperate. There is no combat system, inventory management, or skill tree. The tension comes from being confined with someone unpredictable while the game gradually introduces psychological and supernatural questions. Replaying the demo can reveal different dialogue, text variations, and small reactions, especially when the player changes what they read or how directly they challenge Demyan.
