Monster Nomster is a 2D action shooter with roguelike elements developed by Traxiss in GDevelop. The player controls Kram, a small koblin servant whose dragon guardian has been captured. The objective is to travel through hostile areas, defeat monsters, improve Kram’s abilities, and eventually rescue the dragon. Version 1.0 was released on August 18, 2026, completing the main campaign and adding the final zone and multiple endings.
Story and Areas
The story follows Kram as he searches for his captured dragon mistress. Progress is divided into three main zones, including the Fungal Forest and the final Cosmic Cavern. Each area contains regular encounters, stronger enemies, visitor events, items, and a boss. Reaching and defeating the final opponent completes the rescue storyline, but the game has three possible endings depending on the player’s progression and decisions.
Combat and Character Progression
Gameplay combines ranged attacks, movement, dodging, resource management, and the game’s central eating mechanic. Kram can defeat and devour enemies to restore hunger and gain experience. Leveling up provides perks that modify the character’s abilities, while dragon breath weapons offer additional attacks. If Kram is swallowed and defeated, he can reform and continue, but reformations are normally limited.
Important gameplay systems include:
- Procedurally generated encounters and roguelike progression
- Character levels and selectable perks
- Multiple dragon breath weapons
- Normal, elite, visitor, and boss encounters
- Fishing to replenish hunger
- Merchants selling useful items
- Artifacts and randomly placed treasure
- Visitor events with special rewards
- A gallery unlocked after defeating bosses
How to Play
Players move through each zone while eliminating enemies and searching for resources. Keeping distance from dangerous creatures, timing dodge rolls, and selecting useful perks are important for surviving later encounters. Some enemies require different tactics, while bosses act as major progression checkpoints. Defeating bosses can also provide powerful boss perks. Hard Mode increases the survival challenge; in version 1.0, normal digestion no longer restores health when this mode is active.
Monster Nomster also includes optional activities between standard fights. Players can fish for food, interact with friendly visitors, purchase items from merchants, search levels for breakable treasure, and participate in special events such as the Dice & Dinner poker-dice minigame. The completed 1.0 campaign ends in the Cosmic Cavern, where Kram confronts the character responsible for capturing his dragon guardian and can reach one of three endings.
