Scrap Mechanic 2 is a construction and survival sandbox in which the player controls a maintenance mechanic stranded on an agricultural planet. The local worker robots, known as Farmbots, have stopped following their programs and now attack humans. The main objective is to survive, investigate the malfunction, and reach the planet’s core. The story provides missions and discoveries, but players can choose how quickly they follow it.

From Crash Site to Underground Mines

Survival begins near a crashed spacecraft with limited supplies. The player searches ruined buildings, collects wood, metal, food, and mechanical components, and uses them to make tools. Farming becomes an important source of food and materials, but growing crops can trigger robot raids. Bases therefore require walls, traps, mounted defenses, or vehicles capable of fighting attackers. Later exploration leads to warehouses, mechanic stations, settlements, mines, and underground areas containing resources and story information.

Modes, Trials, and Player Objectives

Scrap Mechanic 2 does not have a standard sequence of numbered campaign levels. Its Survival Mode takes place in a generated open world where progress depends on equipment, completed missions, and access to new locations. Challenge Mode offers 40 separate Master Mechanic Trials with defined objectives. Creative Mode removes resource restrictions and gives the player access to more than 400 construction parts. Custom challenges can also be created and shared.

The main activities include:

  • gathering materials and refining resources;
  • crafting tools, weapons, engines, and machine parts;
  • building cars, drilling machines, farms, and defensive systems;
  • completing missions and exploring underground locations;
  • fighting Farmbots with tools, Spudguns, and constructed machines.

Turning Parts into Working Machines

Construction is based on physical connections between blocks and interactive components. The player places parts with the Lift, connects bearings to wheels or moving sections, installs an engine, and uses the Connect Tool to link controls. Controllers can program the rotation of bearings, while sensors activate doors, traps, lights, or automated devices. A basic vehicle needs a frame, driver’s seat, wheels, bearings, and an engine. More complicated creations may include suspension, steering systems, drills, pistons, and transforming sections.
