Your Happy Place is a short first-person horror experience built around liminal spaces, Dreamcore imagery, and environments inspired by the Backrooms. The game does not explain its story through dialogue or named characters. Instead, the player enters a sequence of strangely familiar locations and follows the route prepared by an unknown presence. The central question is whether these empty places belong to the player’s memories or to someone else searching for a “happy place.”

The central question is whether these empty places belong to the player’s memories or to someone else searching for a “happy place.”

Familiar Places Without People

Exploration begins in spaces that appear ordinary but feel disconnected from reality. Corridors, recreational areas, indoor rooms, and other transitional locations are presented with VHS-style distortion that makes the journey resemble footage recorded on an old camcorder. The environments are mostly quiet, allowing changes in lighting, distant noises, unusual objects, and blocked passages to guide the player forward.

Following the Only Available Path

Your Happy Place does not contain traditional numbered levels, combat encounters, an inventory system, or character upgrades. It is structured as one connected journey through several liminal environments. Progress depends on moving forward, examining the surroundings, and interacting with objects that open the next section. During the playthrough, the player will:

  •         Walk through changing indoor and outdoor locations
  •         Search for routes through apparently empty spaces
  •         Interact with doors, switches, and environmental objects
  •         Observe visual changes and signs of another presence
  •         Enter increasingly unfamiliar areas
  •         Reach the final sequence and discover the ending

The experience gradually changes from quiet exploration into a more direct horror scenario, with the danger becoming clearer near the end.

Controls and Length

Movement uses the WASD keys, the mouse controls the camera, and E is used to interact with available objects. There are no complicated commands or combat actions to learn. Players should inspect unusual details and check nearby routes before continuing, although the game remains mostly linear and does not require complex puzzle solving.

A complete session lasts around half an hour. Your Happy Place is available for Windows and was created in Unreal Engine 5 using Lumen lighting and Virtual Shadow Maps. Its main objective is not to collect items or defeat an enemy, but to move through the full sequence of liminal locations and understand what the title’s “happy place” represents.
