Ardem is an open-world survival game set years after the RHAB-14 virus destroyed modern civilization. The outbreak, connected to a project known as “Artificial Demography,” transformed much of humanity into aggressive mutated beings known as the Restless. The player enters Minnowa, a 64 km² region of the American Midwest where towns, roads, military sites, forests, caves, and abandoned buildings have been left behind. Survival is only the starting objective: the larger goal is to reclaim parts of the world by restoring infrastructure and creating permanent settlements.

Exploring and Gathering What Remains

Minnowa is a handcrafted open world containing hundreds of locations rather than procedurally assembled areas. Players can search abandoned houses, gas stations, shopping centers, military compounds, bunkers, industrial locations, and remote wilderness for useful supplies. Resources are needed for food, equipment, construction, weapons, and vehicle repairs, while dangerous infected creatures make some valuable locations harder to search. Actions can permanently change structures and conditions in the world, allowing explored areas to develop differently over time.

Bases, Electricity, and Vehicles

Building a shelter provides longer-term progression. A small protected space can gradually become a larger base containing storage, furniture, defenses, and functional equipment. Electricity is a major system rather than a simple decorative feature: different power sources can be connected to equipment and infrastructure, allowing players to bring parts of the abandoned world back into operation.

Important survival systems include:

  • Constructing and decorating bases
  • Restoring electrical systems
  • Repairing abandoned vehicles
  • Adding modules and attachments to vehicles
  • Customizing firearms with modifications
  • Hunting wildlife and fishing
  • Growing crops for food
  • Managing temperature through suitable clothing
  • Fighting infected enemies with different behaviors
  • Exploring hidden paths, caves, bunkers, and abandoned settlements

Vehicles can be rebuilt instead of functioning simply as ready-made transportation. Their components, upgrades, and attachments can be modified, making them useful for exploration and carrying resources across the large map. Weapons similarly support different attachments and configurations.

Surviving in a Persistent World

Ardem does not revolve around a linear sequence of missions or numbered levels. Progress comes from establishing a reliable place to live, gathering better equipment, restoring technology, improving transportation, and pushing farther into dangerous parts of Minnowa. Survival conditions also include weather and temperature, requiring appropriate clothing and preparation before longer journeys.

The world can contain cooperative survivors as well as hostile players, with PvE, PvP, and role-playing environments supporting different types of interaction. This means a settlement may become a shared rebuilding project, a defended stronghold, or a target for other survivors. The central progression remains tied to changing the environment itself: restoring power, repairing machines, securing territory, and gradually turning pieces of the ruined region into functioning places again.
