Celeste is a 2D platform game about Madeline, a young woman attempting to climb Celeste Mountain while dealing with anxiety, self-doubt, and a hostile manifestation of part of herself. The story develops between platforming sections through conversations with characters such as Theo and the mountain’s inhabitants. Reaching the summit is the main objective, but the journey gradually becomes connected to Madeline’s personal problems and her attempt to understand rather than simply suppress them.

Climbing One Room at a Time

The game is divided into chapters made up of many individual platforming rooms. Madeline can run, jump, climb walls while stamina remains, wall jump, and perform an air dash in eight directions. Landing normally restores the dash, while green crystals can recharge it in mid-air. New chapters introduce mechanics such as moving blocks, bubbles, dream blocks, wind, and other objects that change how the player moves through each section.

The main gameplay elements include:

  • Running, jumping, climbing, and wall jumping
  • Eight-direction air dashes
  • Hundreds of platforming rooms
  • Checkpoints between difficult sections
  • Optional strawberries
  • Hidden Crystal Hearts
  • Cassette tapes that unlock B-Sides
  • More difficult B-Side and C-Side stages
  • Environmental mechanics unique to different chapters
  • Assist Mode with adjustable difficulty options

Optional Routes and Harder Challenges

The main campaign is divided into chapters such as Forsaken City, Old Site, Celestial Resort, Golden Ridge, Mirror Temple, Reflection, and The Summit. Exploring beyond the direct route can reveal strawberries and other secrets. Strawberries are optional collectibles and are often placed behind harder platforming challenges. Cassette tapes unlock B-Sides, which reuse the mechanics of their corresponding chapters in significantly more difficult layouts. Completing the B-Sides eventually opens shorter but harder C-Sides.

Mastering Movement to Reach the Summit

Celeste does not use combat as its main challenge. Progress depends almost entirely on learning movement and completing increasingly complicated sequences of jumps, climbs, and dashes. Death usually returns Madeline to the beginning of the current room, allowing difficult sections to be attempted repeatedly without replaying a large portion of the chapter.

To play effectively, players need to watch Madeline’s stamina while climbing and save the dash for moments when normal jumping cannot reach the next platform. Later rooms require several mechanics to be combined in one sequence, making timing and direction increasingly important. The main story leads toward the summit, while optional collectibles, B-Sides, C-Sides, and the Farewell chapter provide additional challenges after the primary climb.
