D3V0UR is a horror visual novel about a student spending a semester abroad at the same university as Avery, a childhood friend they have not seen in person for a long time. The two remained in contact, and Avery has already introduced the protagonist to several of his friends through a group chat. Arriving in a new country means finally meeting this group face to face and adjusting to university life. At the same time, the protagonist has started experiencing unusual dreams that become increasingly difficult to dismiss as simple stress.
University Life and Relationships
Much of the game follows conversations, meetings with friends, phone messages, and everyday situations. Dialogue choices allow the player to respond differently to characters, and those decisions can affect how people feel about the protagonist. Friendship and optional romance routes are part of the game, so interactions are not limited to a single fixed relationship. The phone and messaging system is also interactive and is used as part of conversations and story progression.
Beyond the Visual Novel Sections
D3V0UR periodically changes from regular visual novel scenes to directly playable sections. Some environments can be explored freely, allowing the player to move around, inspect objects, discover hidden clues, and solve puzzles. The horror portions include strange dream sequences and jumpscares, with some sections requiring the player to move through an area while avoiding danger.
The main gameplay elements include:
- choosing responses during conversations;
- developing friendships or possible romances;
- reading and sending messages through the phone;
- exploring interactive environments;
- searching for hidden clues;
- solving codes and other puzzles;
- moving, crouching, sprinting, and interacting during playable sequences.
What the Demo Contains
The current demo covers Chapter 1 and introduces the main cast along with several of the game’s different mechanics. Controls change depending on the section. Dialogue and interactions primarily use the mouse, while playable sequences can use A and D for movement, E for interaction, S for crouching, and Shift for sprinting when that option is available.
The first chapter establishes two sides of the protagonist’s new life. One involves meeting Avery and the rest of the friend group after previously knowing most of them only online. The other centers on the unusual dreams and horror events that interrupt otherwise normal university experiences. Choices, character reactions, puzzles, exploration, and these dream sequences form the main progression of the available demo, while the larger story continues beyond Chapter 1.
