Nine missing pages are the only objective standing between the player and escape in The Tall Man, a first-person survival horror game set in a dark forest. The player searches through foggy clearings, ruined buildings, cemetery areas, and abandoned vehicles while a supernatural figure moves through the same environment. There is a small story setup involving a missing brother and a broken bicycle found near a tunnel, but most of the narrative is communicated through exploration rather than dialogue.
Searching the Forest for Nine Pages
The entire map functions as one connected survival area instead of being divided into conventional numbered levels. Pages can appear near trees, walls, vehicles, ruins, and other landmarks, and their locations are semi-randomized between runs. Keys are also used to open barriers leading into additional parts of the forest. A mini-map helps with navigation, while the page counter shows how much of the main objective remains.
The main gameplay elements include:
- Nine pages to locate
- First-person forest exploration
- A flashlight with limited battery
- Sprinting with limited stamina
- Keys that unlock new areas
- A mini-map and countdown timer
- Semi-random page locations
- A supernatural enemy that becomes more aggressive
Light Is a Limited Resource
The flashlight is necessary for checking dark corners and identifying possible page locations, but its battery cannot be recharged. Leaving it active constantly can therefore make the later part of a run more difficult. Players also need to manage stamina because sprinting is limited. Structures and terrain can be used to break line of sight when the Tall Man approaches. Looking at him for too long causes screen distortion and audio interference while increasing the danger.
Every Page Increases the Pressure
Difficulty rises during the same run rather than through separate stages. As more pages are collected, the Tall Man becomes more active and the soundscape intensifies, leaving less time for slow exploration. The final pages are therefore usually harder to obtain than the first ones.
To play effectively, memorize major landmarks and avoid using sprint or flashlight power without a reason. Search nearby structures systematically so the same area is not checked repeatedly, and save stamina for encounters with the Tall Man. When he appears, turn away and create distance instead of watching him. The run is completed by finding all nine pages while managing battery, stamina, navigation, and the increasingly aggressive pursuer.
