Ensis IDLE is a text-based dark fantasy incremental game built around resource production, repeated upgrades, exploration, and combat. The player gradually develops a character and base while unlocking new systems that increase production or open additional progression paths. Instead of traditional movement through a visual world, most actions are performed through menus, statistics, timers, and selectable activities. Progress starts slowly but expands as more mechanics become available.

From Ash to a New Body

One of the central resources is Ash, which is used to improve Body Parts and increase overall production. Progress eventually leads to Obliteration, a reset mechanic that removes part of the current advancement in exchange for permanent bonuses. Repeated Obliterations allow the player to form stronger bodies and reach systems that were inaccessible during earlier runs. Perk Points provide additional long-term upgrades, while some bonuses affect training speed, Ash generation, and the efficiency of future resets.

The main progression systems include:

  •         Ash production and Body Part upgrades
  •         Obliteration resets with permanent bonuses
  •         Perk Points and research
  •         Base construction and building levels
  •         Exploration of different lands
  •         Weapons, equipment, and item rarity
  •         Boss battles and regular enemies
  •         Vortex Essence and Vortex Powers
  •         Soulforging for improving equipment
  •         Viridarium plants with additional effects

Exploring Lands and Fighting Enemies

Exploration gradually reveals locations, points of interest, enemies, and unique events. Combat becomes another major part of progression once it is unlocked. Characters have statistics such as health, speed, armor, and damage, while equipment and modifiers can further change their performance. Different enemies scale in health and damage, and bosses serve as important progression checkpoints. Defeating opponents can reward Souls and equipment, including items with different rarity levels. The Lands journal and Bestiary help track discovered areas and creatures.

Building Power Between Battles

The base provides another layer of long-term development. Players construct and upgrade buildings, improve research, and reduce the time or resources needed for future progression. Certain milestones require developing the Fort before further exploration becomes possible. Later systems include Vortex Powers, which provide additional scaling, and Soulforging, which uses Scraps to improve item statistics and modifiers. The Viridarium also allows players to grow different plants, adding another resource-management mechanic.

Ensis IDLE does not use conventional numbered levels or a linear stage structure. Instead, progression is divided between body development, resets, exploration, base upgrades, research, equipment, and increasingly difficult combat encounters. The game also contains dark-fantasy lore connected to locations and bosses, with additional story text appearing when certain enemies are encountered or defeated. To advance efficiently, players need to balance spending resources on immediate upgrades with saving them for systems that provide larger permanent bonuses later.
