FNF Psych Engine is a modified Friday Night Funkin’ engine designed both for playing the original rhythm game and for creating custom FNF content. It was originally developed for the Mind Games mod and later became a widely used base for fan-made projects. Psych Engine does not have its own separate story, characters, or campaign. Instead, it can run the standard Friday Night Funkin’ weeks while also supporting custom songs, characters, stages, dialogue, cutscenes, and entire modded weeks.

Playing Songs and Custom Weeks

When used as a game, Psych Engine follows the regular FNF rhythm format. Directional notes move toward fixed receptors, and the player presses the matching controls when the notes reach them. Accurate timing keeps the health bar in a safe position, while repeated misses can end the song. Story Mode can organize tracks into weeks, while Freeplay allows individual songs to be selected directly. Since mods can add their own content, the number of available songs and stages depends on which projects are installed.

Psych Engine includes tools and options such as:

  •         Story Mode and Freeplay;
  •         configurable keyboard controls;
  •         downscroll, middlescroll, and ghost tapping;
  •         Botplay for automatic note input;
  •         custom characters, stages, weeks, and dialogue;
  •         video cutscene support;
  •         chart and character editors;
  •         Lua and HScript-based mod scripting;
  •         custom note types and gameplay events.

The Engine Can Be Used to Build Mods

One of the main differences between Psych Engine and the standard version of Friday Night Funkin’ is its focus on modding tools. Creators can add new weeks without rewriting the entire game source and can use scripts to control characters, notes, cameras, visual effects, and other events. The chart editor also allows creators to place notes, adjust timing, change note types, and trigger events at specific points in a song. Newer versions continue to expand these systems with redesigned editors and additional chart options.

There Is No Fixed Set of Levels

FNF Psych Engine does not have its own numbered levels or original progression path. The playable structure depends on the content loaded into the engine. A basic installation can contain familiar Friday Night Funkin’ weeks, while a modded setup may replace them or add entirely new campaigns, songs, difficulty settings, and mechanics.

For players, the main objective remains completing rhythm charts and improving accuracy. For creators, Psych Engine also functions as a development environment where songs, animations, dialogue, stages, and special mechanics can be assembled into a complete FNF mod. This makes it both a playable version of Friday Night Funkin’ and a framework used to build many separate fan projects.
