The story begins at an Outpost where Biggie and Murch are attempting to construct a shelter in a scorched wasteland. Grain Rot places the player inside Scrappie, a fragile wooden puppet powered by a living Spark. The story begins at an Outpost where Biggie and Murch are attempting to construct a shelter in a scorched wasteland. After completing introductory tasks, Scrappie receives access to a cursed elevator leading into underground ruins filled with resources and corrupted creatures.

Descending into the Deep Layers

The underground area is known as the Deep Layers. It does not contain a fixed sequence of traditional levels because its rooms, hazards, enemies, and available loot change between expeditions. Each descent begins near the elevator, which also serves as the only reliable escape route. Players must collect enough gold to activate it and return safely with everything found during the run.

Gathering Resources and Surviving

Most objects in the ruins can be picked up, carried, thrown, or destroyed. Furniture and other valuable items can be placed in a nearby wrecker and converted into gold, scraps, or artifacts. Enemies called the Corrupted patrol the rooms, forcing players to decide whether to fight, use traps, or escape. Dying before extraction causes the loss of carried equipment and collected resources.

During an expedition, players can:

  • break furniture with a mallet;
  • search rooms for gold and artifacts;
  • carry large objects to the wrecker;
  • fight creatures with tools and weapons;
  • remove Rot by standing in sunlight;
  • cooperate with other wooden puppets.

Back at the Outpost, collected scraps are used to repair walls, craft furniture, and improve different rooms. Placing compatible structures can provide additional experience, while upgrading the shelter increases health, stamina, attack power, and shop quality. Artifacts can be inserted into a machine to receive random building blueprints. These upgrades remain available between expeditions and allow players to explore more dangerous parts of the Deep Layers.

Planning the Next Extraction

Successful play requires balancing exploration with the cost of returning home. Players should monitor their health, stamina, equipment, Rot level, and available gold before moving farther from the elevator. Useful weapons and navigation tools should be protected because they disappear after a failed expedition. Grain Rot can be played alone or cooperatively, with several players carrying furniture, distracting enemies, sharing resources, and helping one another reach the extraction point.
