Happy Salmon is a physical card game for three to eight players in which everyone acts at the same time. Each participant receives a color-coded stack containing repeated action cards. The goal is to find matching partners, complete the indicated gestures, and discard the entire stack before anyone else. There is no storyline, campaign, or fictional objective beyond the fish-themed presentation and the race to finish first.

Everyone Begins at the Same Time

Players shuffle their individual stacks and hold them face down. After a countdown, everyone turns the complete stack face up and reads the action shown on the top card. There are no separate turns, so all participants immediately call out their actions while listening for someone saying the same phrase. Standing around a table is recommended because one action requires players to exchange positions.

Finding a Partner in the Crowd

When two players discover that their top cards match, they make eye contact and perform the corresponding gesture together. Both cards are then discarded, revealing the next action in each stack. If three or more people announce the same action, only the first pair to complete it can discard their cards. The remaining players must find another available partner or wait for a matching card to appear.

The standard actions include:

• High Five: two matching players slap their raised hands together.
• Fish Bump: the pair completes a light fist bump.
• Switcheroo: both players exchange places while carrying their cards.
• Happy Salmon: each player lightly taps the other person’s forearm several times.
• Skip: a player who cannot find a partner moves the current card to the bottom of the stack.

One Continuous Round to the Finish

Happy Salmon does not have conventional levels, boards, points, character abilities, or unlockable content. A game consists of one continuous simultaneous round that commonly lasts only a few minutes. The changing order of cards creates temporary obstacles because a player may be unable to match the visible action immediately. Moving that card to the bottom prevents the participant from remaining stuck and allows another action to enter play.
