Pokémon Overlord changes the familiar Pokémon battle system into a tactical roguelike where team composition and positioning determine the outcome of fights. The story takes place inside a mysterious hotel hosting a Pokémon card tournament. You arrive as a participant and encounter familiar characters from the Pokémon series, each with their own team. As the competition progresses, unusual events suggest that something else is happening behind the scenes. Your objective is to win battles, strengthen your collection, and uncover the tournament’s secrets.
Preparing Your Team for Battle
Each team can contain up to three Pokémon arranged in front and back rows. Front-row Pokémon protect their teammates, while those in the back receive protection from most attacks but move 30% slower. Before combat, you choose which attacks and abilities your Pokémon will use. Each creature has two attack slots and one ability slot. Since battles usually last around one minute, selecting appropriate abilities and positioning your team correctly is essential.
Collecting Cards and Improving Pokémon
Pokémon Overlord allows you to build teams using collectible Pokémon cards. Different creatures have unique abilities, making them suitable for particular strategies. You can also purchase stat-boosting items to improve their performance.
The main gameplay features include:
- Collecting Pokémon cards to expand your roster.
- Arranging teams in front and back rows.
- Selecting attacks and abilities before combat.
- Improving Pokémon with stat-boosting items.
- Experimenting with different team combinations.
- Challenging familiar Pokémon characters.
- Earning rewards after successful battles.
The rarity system allows weaker Pokémon to compete with stronger ones. Stat upgrades provide larger improvements to lower-rarity creatures, making them useful even against legendary opponents.
Tournament Progression and Game Modes
The main story follows a tournament structure with increasingly difficult opponents. Characters develop stronger teams as the competition continues, requiring you to adjust your strategy. Progression involves advancing through tournament rounds rather than completing traditional exploration levels.
Additional modes offer different challenges. League Challenge allows you to play as characters from the tournament using their established teams. Battle Frontier features 30 consecutive battles where you gradually build your roster. Versus Mode supports offline multiplayer matches. Each mode emphasizes understanding Pokémon abilities, planning formations, and adapting your team to different opponents.
