Really Loud Librarians is a team-based word game about naming items that match both a category and a changing set of letters. Players divide into two groups represented by librarians Gertrude Birdwhistle and Wilfred Dankworth. The box contains a circular letter board, 60 Category Cards, 20 Letter Tiles, a one-minute timer, two librarian pieces, scoring markers, bonus tokens, lap tokens, and a movable chain with three rings. There is no storyline or campaign.

Moving Through the Alphabet

During a turn, the active team places its librarian inside the chain’s large ring. The three smaller rings highlight letters that may be used for answers. A Category Card provides a subject such as school supplies, vegetables, or fictional characters. Team members simultaneously call out valid words beginning with one of the available letters. After every accepted answer, the chain moves counterclockwise until the librarian reaches that word’s first letter, producing three new choices.

Racing from the Same Position

Each team receives 60 seconds to move as far around the board as possible. Both teams begin their turns from the same location but use separate Category Cards. The inactive group checks the answers and may challenge a word that does not fit the category, begins with an unavailable letter, is not a recognized word, or has already been used during that turn. The timer is paused while disputed answers are discussed.

A complete round involves these steps:

  • Reveal a Letter Tile and place it beside its matching letter.
  • Draw a Category Card for the first team.
  • Start the one-minute timer.
  • Shout valid answers and move the chain.
  • Mark the final position of the first librarian.
  • Reset the chain for the second team.
  • Compare the distance covered by both groups.

Points, Bonuses, and Completed Laps

Really Loud Librarians does not use conventional levels, maps, or unlockable stages. Instead, the match consists of repeated rounds. The team that travels farther receives one point, while a tie gives neither side anything. Landing on a letter marked by a Letter Tile awards a Bonus Token. These tokens provide additional points only if that team wins the current round, and they are returned after scoring.

The first team to reach at least 12 points wins the game. Completing a full circuit is recorded with a Lap Token, allowing progress to continue beyond the starting letter. Players can improve their results by looking at all three available letters before giving an answer. A word beginning with the farthest highlighted letter moves the librarian three spaces, while the nearest option advances it only one. Short, familiar answers are usually easier to confirm quickly, but teams must also avoid repetitions. Since new Letter Tiles remain on the board for later rounds, more opportunities to collect bonus points appear as the match continues.
